Young workers are at much higher risk of injury than other workers. That's why it's important to know what helps to keep YWs safe.

To help prevent workplace injury, YWs need three main things:

1. Orientation

This is a special meeting for employees who are new to the workplace to learn about:

  • Where things are located in the workplace
  • Who works there and what jobs people do
  • What workplace hazards exist, how to manage them and who to report them to
  • What to do in an emergency
  • Where to get first aid equipment and who to report injuries, illnesses and near misses to
  • OHS policies

2. Training

This is instruction and practice in how to complete all work correctly and safely by teaching:

  • Safe work procedures
  • How to complete all tasks safely
  • How to remove or control OHS risks

3. Supervision

This is when employers or supervisors watch, check and give feedback on the way an employee is working to make sure it is safe

  • YWs should always be supervised until employers and supervisors, especially when they are new to the workplace
  • Unsafe work can only be corrected if YWs are supervised

    YWs start with an orientation.

    YWs aren't injured.

YWs know what to do in case of an emergency, e.g. fire or accident.

YWs have direct supervision at most times, especially when they are new.

YWs have been trained how to complete each task safely. Hazards are reported and safely managed (not ignored).

Taking short cuts is not expected or accepted by employers, supervisors or employees.

OHS information is communicated with YWs and regularly updated.

YWs are routinely consulted (asked) about OHS.

YWs have access to written OHS policies and safe work procedures.

YWs are informed of any new OHS issues either before they arrive for work or as soon as they get to work.
