Written OHS policies and safe work method statements ensure that acceptable OHS standards are clearly understood and consistent throughout the workplace. Supervisors can also refer to OHS policies and procedures when giving instructions or training YWs how to be safe. If YWs forget instructions and training (as people of all ages can do), they can refer to the safe work method statements to check how to work safely, rather than making dangerous and expensive mistakes.
Written OHS policies and documents also help to demonstrate management's commitment to OHS.
A safety culture starts with leadership and commitment from management.
Having YW OHS policies and procedures demonstrates managements’ awareness of the special OHS needs of YWs. It also sends a clear message about managements’ commitment to protecting the health and safety of YWs. YWs learn safety behaviour by watching those around them.
Being ready and willing to change OHS policies and procedures in order to give safety top priority is another way that management can demonstrate commitment to YW OHS, e.g. changing work practices or the mandated level of supervision to accomodate the special OHS needs of YWs.
