OHS discussions with YWs can take place in a number of ways. Workgroups, including YWs, must have regular, scheduled meetings to talk about specific OHS issues affecting them. All staff can meet to brainstorm solutions to OHS issues affecting the whole workplace.
YWs can be formally consulted during scheduled OHS meetings or informally through conversations with supervisors and/or OHS representatives.
Meet with a cross-section of YWs to gather their views, ideas and suggestions about OHS issues affecting them. Focus groups are interviews with around 6-10 people who discuss a set of questions or OHS topics together. Supervisors and OHS representatives can learn a great deal about YW OHS and check that management's OHS policies and procedures are flowing through to YWs.
Get quick, easy and free advice from YWs about OHS issues by inviting them to write their ideas down and place them anonymously into a suggestion box. Invite YWs to add their name if they wish to continue the discussion further.
WARNING!! YWs will feel that the process is not genuine or fair if they are invited to express their views and are then punished, criticised or embarrassed for doing so.
These are short, informal meetings about OHS issues. The goal is to train YW to recognise, avoid, report, and (when appropriate) correct safety hazards. These meetings can deal with a specific OHS issue on a needs-basis or have a schedule of topics to be discussed. Invite or roster employees, including YWs, to nominate a topic that is interesting/ important/relevant to them. Toolbox talks are usually brief (no more than 30 minutes) and include time for questions and answers.
