Check What Young Workers Know About Safety In Your Workplace Print E-mail

“They took me around and showed me all the equipment and hazards and stuff but I can't really remember them all exactly.”

Many employers and supervisors invest time and energy in young worker orientation and training or repeatedly tell young workers what to do, only to find that injuries, near-misses and costly mistakes still occur. Find out exactly what young workers do and do not know about OHS at your workplace by following the steps below.

Click headings below to expand.

1. Check that the questions suit your workplaces' OHS policies and procedures.

2. Print out the quiz or change the questions to better suit your workplace.

3. Get young workers to take the quiz.

4. Get supervisors of young workers to take the quiz to make sure they know the answers too.

NOTE: The correct answers will be specific to individual workplaces.

If young workers can't answer all questions correctly, find out why. Check if they need orientation, training, supervision or more information. Get them to repeat the quiz (preferably with some new questions added) to make sure they fully understand all OHS procedures.

If supervisors can't answer all questions correctly, get them to go to the Supervisors of Young Workers section and work through the modules. Check their self-assessment and activity answers to make sure they fully understand all OHS procedures as well as effective strategies for managing, consulting and communicating with YWs.

Employers and supervisors can use the results to start a conversation with young workers about any gaps in their OHS knowledge and to see how successfully they are orientating, training and supervising young workers.

Employers may also need to provide OHS training to supervisors who can't answer all questions correctly.

WARNING!! Only use the quiz to check what young workers and supervisors know about workplace safety. Avoid an OHS communication shutdown and do not use the quiz to criticise, embarrass or punish employees.
